Top 5 Computer Energy Saving Tips

With high energy prices it makes sense to reduce your electricity usage where possible following our top 5 computer energy saving tips. You may not know it but it is safe to say that your PC, laptop, notebook, external hard drivers, monitors or whatever else you are using at home or office do consume  quite a bit of power.

To make savings, all you need to do is to follow our top 5 computer energy saving tips and, if you have a power monitor at home, see the savings you are making in real time! Here are our top tips.

1. Turn off your Screen Savers

A Screen Saver is a picture or animation that covers your screen and appears when your computer is idle for a set period of time.

Screen Savers look pretty, but they waste electricity by keeping your graphics card and processor working hard. You can turn them off by either right-clicking a blank area of your Desktop and selecting Personalize, or clicking the Start icon and selecting the Control Panel.

2. Turn off your Monitor(s)

Try to get into the habit of turning your monitor or monitors, if you have a multi-monitor setup, off when not in use. Even when you walk away from your computer to have a short break there is no point in keeping your monitor on.

 3. Turn off your peripherals

Try switching on your peripherals, for example; printers, external hard drives, Cameras, and Micro Phones only when you need them.

4. Select a power plan

A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that manages how your computer uses power. Power plans can help you save energy, maximize system performance, or achieve a balance between the two.

You can select a power plan by either clicking on the battery icon on the System tray, usually at the bottom of your screen, or by selecting  Start, Control Panel, Power Options.

With the Power Plan options available you can:

  •  Get your monitor to turn off automatically after a period of inactivity, both on battery and when plugged in.
  • Put the computer to sleep automatically after a period of inactivity, both on battery and when plugged in.
  • Adjust display brightness, both on battery and when plugged in.
  • Use advanced settings to turn off the hard drive after a period of inactivity, both on battery and when plugged in.

 5. Hibernate it

Hibernate is an energy saving option designed primarily for laptops. By selecting the Hibernate option instead of Stand By, Sleep, or Shut Down what you are effectively doing is, you are copying everything in your computer memory to a file called Hiberfil.sys. On power up, Windows loads this file straight into memory without any boot checks being performed. By avoiding boot checks you save energy and your computer starts up much faster at the same time.
